SONY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2025

COMPETITION LAUNCH

Submissions to the 18th edition of the Sony World Photography Awards are open from 1 June 2024, and free for all to enter via worldphoto.org.

The Sony World Photography Awards is a major annual moment recognising the best contemporary photography in the world. Celebrating the images shaping our visual language today, the Awards gives vast exposure and significant opportunities to photographers across the globe. Organised by Creo through its photography strand, World Photography Organisation, the Awards are at the core of Creo’s programming, furthering its mission to empower creative talent. Sony supports the Awards to help the continued development of photographic culture by giving a global platform to today’s talent.

Photographers worldwide are invited to submit to the Awards’ four competitions: Professional, celebrating outstanding series of work between five to 10 images, across ten categories; Open, rewarding the best single images of the year, across ten categories; Youth, championing images by emerging talent aged 19 and under; and Student, highlighting the projects of photography students across the globe.

Additional awards programmes include the National & Regional Awards, the Latin America Professional Award and the Alpha Female Award. Among the key prizes is the Sustainability Prize, developed in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures.

Entry to the Awards is completely free and photographers are judged anonymously by a panel of industry leading judges.

NEW IN 2025

New Professional competition category: Perspectives
The 2025 Awards introduces an engaging new category in the Professional competition; entrants will have the opportunity to submit a body of work to the category Perspectives. This category welcomes series that tell a story through a variety of formats and genres - from using a documentary or creative approach to mixing portraiture, landscapes and still life - brought together in an intentional manner and in a cohesive edit with a clear sense of narrative. The judges are looking for bodies of work ranging from well-known stories or everyday moments captured in new angles, to depicting lesser-known subcultures or reimagining local tales, the series should demonstrate a distinct voice and a fascination with the subject.

Student competition Brief: In the Beginning
For this year’s Student competition, photographers are asked to respond to the brief In the Beginning. The start of something new can be an exciting prospect and documenting the point in time or space at which something begins has been a popular theme for photography projects throughout time.

For this year’s brief, students are asked to show through a series of five to 10 images the first part or earliest stage of something. Be it following a new life, sharing the start of someone’s day, following the preparations and beginning of a particular occasion or celebration, or revealing the promise of new technology, the story, approach and photographic style can be in any genre.

The images can be taken on any device, shot in any style. While creative responses are encouraged, photographers must stick to the brief.

Youth competition Brief:
Open Call - Show us your best images!
For this year’s Youth competition, photographers are invited to enter their favourite photographs taken in 2024. Entrants can submit up to three of their striking single images from the past year and share them with the judges. All photographic styles, genres and approaches are welcome.
