Samsara is a stunning cinematic delight that showcases the breathtaking visual power of Sony Digital Cinema 4K technology
4K breathes life into epic visual journey
Visitors to Sony 4K-equipped cinemas are in for an unmissable treat with one of this year’s most visually sumptuous movie releases. Samsara is a sublime showcase for the detail, clarity and expressive impact that 4K projection offers to today’s movie-going audiences.
Five years in the making, Samsara is a wordless documentary that transports viewers along a journey of the soul. Through powerful images pristinely shot in 65mm and a dynamic music score, the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet. Samsara was filmed in almost 100 locations across 26 countries over the course of four years.
Make sure you catch Samsara screened in Sony 4K – and see the difference for yourself.
A powerful new perspective
Produced by Mark Magidson, Samsara is directed by Ron Fricke, the acclaimed US film-maker who is acknowledged as a master of large-format cinematography. Through his work on earlier releases like Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka, Fricke has used techniques including time-lapse and slow motion to present familiar images from a powerful new perspective.
Samsara has already attracted enthusiastic critical attention. According to Total Film it’s a “jaw-dropping” experience, while the Hollywood Reporter calls it “soul-stirring”. Online movie site Indiewire describes Samsara as “visually breathtaking – unlike anything you will ever see”.
It’s been named Best Documentary Film at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, and earned this year’s ‘Soul in Cinema Award’ at the Maui Film Festival. Samsara is released in the UK by Arrow Films.

Transforming the cinematic experience
Sony Digital Cinema 4K technology gives the consumer an immersive, engaging visual experience. With over 4 times the resolution of an HD or the previous generation digital cinema (2K), Sony Digital Cinema 4K technology has captured the imagination of audiences and the cinema industry alike.
Hollywood studios are embracing 4K as a presentation medium, with releases from Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures. Hollywood heavyweights have also committed to the format, with Christopher Nolan (all three movies of the “Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception”), David Fincher (“The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo”) and Harald Zwart (“Karate Kid”), who have all released their most recent blockbusters in the 4K format.
Sony is the only manufacturer currently deploying a 4K projection system in volume.
