How do I Prt Sc the active window?

Hi elrasouli,

Try the Snipping Tool which can be located at Start > All Programs > Accessories.

Otherwise press the Prt Sc key and then open Paint > Click the Paste icon (top left) – the active window will then appear. You can then save the screenshot in a location and format of your choosing.

Hi woodentop1,

Try the following.

Open Device Manager and expand USB controllers.

Delete all in the tree and then reboot. Windows will reinstall all controller drivers and hopefully the camera will then be recognised.

Hi 750dave,

This is a new one to me but try the following:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click CMD and select ‘Run as Administrator’ – this may not apply depending on operating system – otherwise just open CMD.

2. Type diskpart and press enter.

3. Type list volume and press enter.

4. Type select volume #, where # is the number of the drive that's giving you the write-protected error.

5. Type attributes disk clear readonly and then press enter.

6. Type exit and press enter.

Hi ije2000,

I understand your reluctance to lose all data if you don’t have a backup.

One option would be to remove the hard drive and place it in a USB caddy to attempt a retrieval of data before a factory reset. I would certainly consider this before sending off for repair as there is a strong chance that you would then lose all data anyway.

Hi ije2000,

Did this happen after rebooting following a Windows Update as this has now been reported a few times in the last few weeks – I too have had the same problem.

You could try F8 at boot to carry out a startup repair or safe mode, if these options are available.

Ultimately you may need to try a factory reset (F10 at boot or Assist button when fully shut down) but be aware that this will format the drive and all personal data and third party applications will be lost. This was the only option in my case but thankfully I had a backup of all data.

If that doesn’t work then contact Support for a repair.

There is good and bad news…

The VGN-FE31Z is not one of the models with an inherent Nvidia chip fault but given the beep code and as swapping memory has not solved the problem there is a possibility that either the GPU has failed or requires a reflow.

I can’t suggest any way forward apart from getting a repair company to investigate. You may want to try the following link – I have used their services in the past with good result.

I assume you tried each single module on its own in each slot - rather than just swapping around?

On the occasions that you hear no beep code I take it that there is still no boot?

Can you confirm the product model number as per the edit in my initial reply as some models from this period were affected by a faulty Nvidia chip.

If this is not one of the models acknowledged by Sony to have a faulty Nvidia chip, and it is a graphics chip problem, then there is a possibility that a reflow may resolve the issue. Cost is approx. £120 and some companies offer a no fix no fee deal (apart from collection and return).

Hi L,

One long followed by two short beeps can indicate a graphics adaptor failure but may also result from faulty memory modules.

As the graphics chip is part of the motherboard and therefore not economic to replace I suggest you first investigate a memory issue. Assuming you have two modules fitted try one module, in all combinations, singularly in each slot. This will hopefully rule out a single faulty memory module.

Can you describe the beeps you are hearing as this may give an indication of the problem - e.g. how many long and how many short beeps?

The letter at the end denotes casing colour - /B black, /W white and /L blue (I think).

As far as I am aware the drivers are the same.

This may possibly be explained if you have battery care enabled. To check whether this is the case, open Vaio Control Center > Power Management > Battery Charge Functions.

If battery care function is enabled you can alter the settings by clicking the Advanced button – once the set maximum charge has been reached the icon will display ‘Plugged in not charging’ until the level drops below the pre-set value.

Battery care is designed to prevent constant 100PERCENTAGESIGN charge which can damage the battery.

Maybe someone with a Windows 8 machine that has a Synaptics touchpad can advise whether that registry key is present....

Otherwise you could try creating that key with the values I provided from Vista. No idea whether it will work but you have nothing to lose.

I realise that the \W is the colour of the casing but neither VPCELE1E1W nor PCG-71C11M is a reference that will be recognise in a search on the support site when you are looking for drivers or anything else for that matter.

I realise that Sony make this difficult and confusing but once again, have a look in the BIOS for the correct product model number.

Hi Sammvi,

On the assumption that you are trying to install Windows 7 using a retail version there should not be a problem. There are however compilations when installing the original Sony media on a new hard drive if it is not of the same sector format as the original – i.e. it needs to be 520-byte sectors not the newer Advanced Format that has 4,096-byte structure. This does not apply to a retail version of the OS.

Try returning the BIOS to ‘Setup Defaults’ (F9 in the BIOS setup menu) and then run the install.

BTW you are quoting the chassis reference and a search on the Support site will not recognise this. The main page of the BIOS will give the correct product number – possibly VPCEL1E1E/W.

It has just struck me that the driver you are using doesn't seem to have been released by Sony. The most recent and only update is 16.2.16.3.

I suggest that you uninstall the current driver and then install the originall pre-installed driver followed by the update. Both are available from this link.

Gabh mo leithscéal – I did mean to respond in kind but forgot in my haste to answer. Not a fluent Gaelic speaker (infact far from it) although originally (albeit many years past) from that best of all possible countries, plus my grammar leaves a lot to be desired

Due to the range of devices that are tailored to Sony requirements I can only assume that there is something conflicting from the install on another machine. I suggest that you try and install on the Vaio, from USB (stick or CD/DVD drive) if necessary – preferably with the original Sony media if at all possible.
